Nicole and Jochen’s Playa del Secreto elopement was an intimate wedding celebration on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. After maintaining a long-distance relationship, building a home together and sharing ten years as a couple, they chose the Riviera Maya for a ceremony centred entirely on their commitment to one another.
Surrounded by the sea, the sand and the open sky, they exchanged emotional vows during a private beach ceremony. Cossu Photography documented the experience through natural wedding photography, preserving the quiet moments, joyful expressions and spontaneous connection that made their celebration personal.
Nicole and Jochen first met online in 2009 and officially began their relationship on April 4 of that year. For the first three years, they lived apart and maintained a long-distance relationship while Nicole worked in Munich.
Nicole eventually moved to Jochen’s hometown so they could begin building their everyday life together. In 2018, they bought the house that had belonged to Jochen’s parents, creating a home where they could continue their journey as a couple.
Exactly ten years after their relationship began, on April 4, 2019, Nicole and Jochen became engaged. Their engagement marked a new chapter in a relationship that had already grown through distance, important decisions and years of shared experiences.
Nicole and Jochen knew that a traditional wedding in Germany was not the right choice for them. They both loved sunshine, beaches and the sea, and had already explored several beautiful countries together.
For their wedding, they wanted an experience that reflected this shared love of travel. They therefore decided to elope in Mexico and celebrate their marriage in the natural setting of the Riviera Maya.
A Playa del Secreto elopement allowed them to exchange vows without the schedule or expectations of a large wedding. The focus remained on their relationship and on the meaning of the promises they were making to each other.
While organising their destination elopement, Nicole and Jochen looked for professionals with experience in intimate ceremonies in Mexico. They worked with Alba from heirateninmexiko, who provided practical recommendations for planning their wedding.
Their ceremony took place directly on the beach with an officiant. The celebration included personal vows, a wedding cake and blue drinks that complemented the colours of the Caribbean sky.
The simplicity of the arrangement created space for genuine emotion. Without a large guest list or an elaborate programme, every part of the ceremony could remain personal and closely connected to the couple.
After being declared married, Nicole and Jochen explored the beach together. They walked along the shoreline, ran through the water and enjoyed their first moments as husband and wife.
These unscripted moments became an essential part of their Playa del Secreto elopement photography. Instead of following a rigid series of poses, the photographic story concentrated on their natural interaction and the way they responded to each other.
The beach offered a clean and peaceful setting where movement, light and emotion could shape the images. The photographs preserve not only how the celebration looked, but also the freedom and happiness Nicole and Jochen experienced throughout the day.
An elopement in Riviera Maya is an intimate alternative for couples who want their wedding to concentrate on personal vows and time together. Beaches such as Playa del Secreto provide a natural setting where the Caribbean Sea becomes part of the experience.
Nicole and Jochen’s celebration demonstrates that an elopement can still include meaningful details such as a ceremony, vows, a cake and a complete photographic story. Its smaller scale simply allows those elements to be experienced in a more private way.
Their wedding was shaped by their real story: a relationship that began online, continued across distance and eventually led them from Germany to the Mexican Caribbean.
Cossu Photography is now based in Tuscany, Italy, and photographs weddings and elopements for couples travelling from different countries. Our experience documenting destination celebrations in Mexico has taught us how to work with international couples, unfamiliar environments and wedding days that bring together different languages and backgrounds.
We bring that international experience to intimate weddings and destination celebrations in Tuscany and throughout Italy. Whether a couple chooses a Caribbean beach, the Tuscan countryside or another meaningful destination, our approach remains focused on honest emotion, natural interaction and photographs that preserve the complete story.
Nicole and Jochen’s Playa del Secreto elopement is a beautiful example of how a wedding can remain simple, personal and deeply connected to the couple celebrating it.
